History of Fairview Elementary

Fairview Elementary School was established in the mid-1950s, during a time of great change both in Fort Smith and across the nation. Following World War II, Fort Smith experienced rapid growth due to the baby boom, and the city’s schools soon became overcrowded. In response, the Fort Smith Board of Education set aside six classrooms in the newly built Ramsey Junior High to house elementary students. This temporary school, first known simply as “New Elementary,” opened in 1954.

Two years later, in 1956, students moved into a brand-new building constructed on the site of the old Fort Smith fairgrounds. Despite challenges—such as unfinished facilities on opening day—Fairview quickly established itself as a thriving school community. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) played a central role in shaping the school’s identity and supporting its growth, helping to furnish classrooms, organize community events, and even select the school’s name.

From its humble beginnings in borrowed classrooms to its place as one of the city’s larger elementary schools, Fairview has always centered on one mission: providing children with a strong foundation for learning and growth.

Fairview School

Origin of the School Name

The school’s name, Fairview, was chosen by the PTA. When plans were made to move out of Ramsey Junior High, the district designated a ten-acre plot east of Ramsey for the new building. The land had once been home to the old Fort Smith fairgrounds, and its elevated location provided a broad, scenic view of the city. To honor both the land’s history and its outlook, the PTA selected the name Fairview.
